The fact that he has an instant kill move (what he killed the old man with) means that this is not going to be a very easy for Ichigo. However, it's nice to Ichigo getting back into the action, I was wondering why he was just standing off to the side the last couple of chapters.

Waiting for an opening doesn't mean watching the leader of the Shinigamis getting beat up. He could have come in while the two were talking.

During all of 394 and 395, though, the flames were extinguished and Aizen was just watching the old man and the hollow fight. Ichigo could've taken him from behind then. I suppose Aizen might have been fast enough to not die, but Ichigo still could've gotten some damage in.

Ichigo can't win a  head-on/1vs1 fight with Aizen. That's why he was told to stay and wait for an opening while the captains fight.
