READ FIRST: How to get Half-Life Working on Steam Legally

(1/1)

KarrdeKNR:
Welcome!  This guide is intended to assist new users with setting up Steam, activating a Half-Life CD Key on Steam, and Buying Half-Life from Steam.  This is cross posted in the help section as well.  All users are welcome to refer other users to this thread as well.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SUPPORT ANYONE TRYING TO PLAY WITHOUT A LEGAL COPY OF HALF-LIFE.

1. Downloading and installing Steam

First, go to http://www.steampowered.com and click on the "Get Steam Now" image () on the left side of the screen.  This will download the installer and walk you through the basic Steam setup including account creation.  Steam itself is free, and is the platform for gaming and the community around it.  After logging into your new account in the program, you should see a screen like this:

2. Activating a Half-Life CD key on Steam

This if for those who already own Half-Life as a retail CD, but do not yet have it installed on steam.  If you do not yet have Steam, please follow the steps listed in the first part of this post.  Once you have installed Steam, follow the instructions listed in the following article: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5414-TFBN-1352
Sometimes, there are problems with this process.  If you receive the "Invalid CD Key" error message, see this article: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1968-HKLX-7538  If you are getting the "Duplicate CD Key" error message, see this article: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6823-QADN-7849
Valve is very good about working with people to resolve their issues, especially when it comes to account and CD key problems.  As long as you're not trying to cheat the system or deceive someone, your problem will likely be resolved.  They also run support in many languages.

3. Purchasing Half-Life on Steam

If you have yet to purchase Half-Life, it is recommended that you do it through Steam.  Steam is available worldwide, and anyone with access to a credit card, check card, or paypal account can easily buy any product from Steam.  For those under the age of 18 (or whatever age is considered "legal adult" status in your country), you may or may not need your parents' assistance to set up a paypal account or use a credit/check card if you do not have one of your own.  So let's get started.  When you first login to your Steam account, you should see a screen that looks something like this:

(Note: I've highlighted the important areas in red)

Click in the search box in the upper left hand corner, and enter "Half-Life" into it:

Click the magnifying glass icon, and it should pull up a screen like this:

At, this point, there are several options.  Many packages include Half-Life, as well as other games.  If you just want Half-Life, click on the "add to cart" link next to Half-Life (should be $9.99 in US Dollars)  Then click "Purchase for myself."

Steam accepts payment as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover Card, Paypal, JCB, and  ClickandBuy.  Steam will walk you through the rest of the process.  If you want to use something other than a credit or check card, here are links to the other options.

PayPal
ClickandBuy

If anyone has anything to add, please let me know!
